This is the first spotlight and it's a 3 for 1! From left to right there is Martha Barnett, Chrissey Lunsford (Webster) and finally Jennifer Jasper (Brown) aka Doo Doo.
Don't let the lettering on the bus fool you. This picture was taken in 1995. Those uniforms were 5 or 6 years old. For those of you new to the program, Lloyd used to wear white pants and shoes.
Martha and Chrissey played sax, while Jennifer played the flute. They were each in band for 4 years and they were known for giving underclassmen who couldn't march a hard time; especially the one they called "fungus".

For two decades, Lloyd Memorial has proudly marched onto the field in various competitions throughout the state of Kentucky. The marching band's hard work, perseverance and talent has been rewarded in the form of numerous trophies and plaques that have now taken over the trophy cases in the band room. Lloyd alumni, friends and supporters can now own a piece of Lloyd Memorial marching band history. The following trophies and plaques are available for your collection. A donation of $10.00 or more will get you the trophy of your choice. All plaques are $5.00 each. Greetings Band Alumni!
Whether you joined the ranks of the alumni that graduated from Lloyd Memorial High School last year or decades ago, this letter is for you! On Saturday, October 20, 2007, the band participated in the KMEA State Finals at Papa John’s Stadium in Louisville. This made our 3rd straight appearance at Finals.
Lloyd competes in the 2A class. There are five classes of bands. All bands must compete in the class based on school size. This classification system (and even the idea of a state competition) may be new to those of you who graduated prior to 1986. Nevertheless, it is important for you to read on.
This past marching band season brought several changes with the biggest being a new band director. Randy Webb, the previous director, was offered the opportunity to return to his “home” to direct the band at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, KY. Lloyd is now under the directorship of Andy Shears. He is a 2007 graduate of Northern Kentucky University.
I’m sure you all remember the hours of hard work and dedication that makes a band successful. Pride in our band is something we all take very seriously as I’m sure you and your parents can attest to. For the alumni who have continued to follow the band over the years, we share the joy in once again reaching the standards of competition we experienced when beating bands such as Lafayette and Tates Creek in the 1970s. The tradition of a successful Lloyd Marching Band lives on!
Due to these successes many trophies have filled the cases in the band room to overflowing. There will soon be a catalogue of trophies that are available for purchase on the band website.
We’ve basked in the glory long enough, so I will move on to a more serious note. Because of needs such as new instruments, music arrangements, and paraprofessional salaries, the band could desperately use some help. Financially, we are in great need. Many of our members’ families cannot afford the $400 fee each year. We offer fee reductions to those who qualify and fundraisers for any child who may need help defraying the fee expense. However, there is still a huge gap in our budgeting needs.
This is where you, our band alumni, the people who really understand what band is all about and who still carry fond memories in your hearts, come in. We are asking that you consider making a donation to the band program. No donation is too small. Just imagine if everyone who had ever been in the band at Lloyd made a contribution. What a difference it could make! Donations can be made by mail to Lloyd Band Boosters, P.O. Box 18864, Erlanger, KY 41018, or by visiting the band’s website at www.lloydhighschoolband.com. If you click on the donate button on the home page, you will be able to use a Paypal system to make your contribution, which allows you to use a credit card or bank draft. The boosters recently acquired their 501C-3 status making your gift tax deductible. Please take a moment while looking at the website to add your name to the alumni registry.
As a parent, I have seen the impact the band program has had on my own child, but as a band booster, I have also had the opportunity to see the positive impact the program has had on many other children. I often worry that without band, some of these kids would have had too many opportunities to make poor choices about how to spend idle time. Band has not only filled time, but it has also taught them to be self-disciplined, responsible, involved young people.
If this letter finds its way to the parents of a former band student, please consider making a donation yourself and then forwarding the letter on to your child. I’m sure you remember how proud you were and the emotional tugs at your heart during a band performance.
I hope this letter conjures up some wonderful memories of your band years. With your help many band members will be able to create their own memorable experiences.
