HISTORY OF LLOYD'S WINTERGUARD...
LMHS Winterguard began in 2003 as a recruiting tool to help prepare students for fall Colorguard season. Over the past several years, the Winterguard has made a name for itself and has become a very successful competitor in the TriState Circuit, with their 2006-2007 Scholastic B and 2006-2007 Scholastic A team placing 5th and 1st place respectively in TriState Circuit Championship competition last season.
FOR THOSE OF YOU NEW TO WINTERGUARD...
“Winterguard” is just that - the guard that performs in the “winter” or off-season. Winterguard is much like Colorguard as far as the type of work performed - equipment includes flags, rifles, and sabres. Dance is also emphasized and is an important part of the routine. The missing element here is the band. There is no marching band, but rather the guard performs to recorded music. The entire performance is 4 - 5 1/2 minutes in length.
The schedule is somewhat less demanding than Colorguard in that the team usually practices only two days a week and does not perform at games. As competitions approach, more practices may be added.
Expect to make a day out of competitions. The typical competition day starts around 6:00 am when most of the girls meet for their traditional competition day breakfast before they have to be at school around 7:00-8:00 to practice. The team travels to and from competitions by bus. When the girls aren’t performing, they will be practicing, dressing, warming up, eating, watching other teams compete, and just generally hanging out. Send plenty of money for food, drinks and the seemingly endless supply of “guard items” and memorabilia sold by numerous vendors. Unlike Colorguard, the Winterguard team performs only once during each competition. Depending on the number of teams competing, the day usually wraps up somewhere around 8:00 and 9:00 after awards are announced. The girls then return to school to unload their equipment and fold the tarp.
TRISTATE CIRCUIT...
TSC, aka TriState Circuit for the Pageantry Arts, brings together competitive winter guards, flag and percussion lines from around the Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio area. Last season, more than 80 teams competed in TSA Winterguard competition. Check out the TSC website at www.tristatecircuit.com for more information.
CLASS DISTINCTIONS...
The LMHS Winterguard will compete in both the Scholastic A and Scholastic B class this season in the TriState Circuit. Classes are determined based on a team’s performance from the previous season. TSC defines these two classes as follows:
Scholastic A Class will be comprised of any guard that scored a 80 or above at the previous year’s TSC Championship competition. This class is for units that do or could compete nationally. The performers accomplish beginning vocabulary, programs, and achievement levels consistently and are ready to incorporate intermediate levels. Evaluation will be on WGI A criteria with Class A timing guidelines.
Scholastic B Class is for performers who are just entering the performance arena for the first time. Show concept, equipment and movement skill are at an introductory level. Emphasis is on training. Evaluation will be on WGI Regional A sheet with Regional A timing guidelines. The intent of this class is a starting point for a unit with a maximum of two years in this class.
JUST FOR FUN...
TEN ESSENTIAL NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR ANY GUARD...
-I WILL NOT twirl my pen/pencil, mop/broom, remote control, umbrellas, etc.
-I WILL remember that my equipment is inanimate and does not need a name.
-I WILL buy real shoes. Lyrical shoes were not made for bumming around the house.
-I WILL pay more attention to my grades and NOT to the height of my tosses.
-I WILL NOT do show work with a hockey stick in gym class.
-I WILL get over that one guard whos' show I can remember but who's name I cannot.
-I WILL get over my phase of talking to my equipment. After all, does it ever talk back?
-I WILL find time to hang out with my 'non' guard friends.
-I WILL NOT relate everything to guard.
-I WILL get a job to support my habit.
-You go to attention when someone claps at you in the hallways.
-As soon as you step onto a gym floor, you put your head up and smile at the bleachers, whether or not anyone is there.
-The band room is your second home.
-Flannel pants are you favorite piece of clothing.
-You've run more laps than the track team, done more push-ups than the football team, and practiced more than the cheerleaders - and still get no credit for it.
-You've gotten undressed in the band room.
-You'd be at practice, even if you have pneumonia. And you'd be smiling.
-You know where everything is in the first aid kit.
-You know that "one more time" never means one more time.
-Skin-tight spandex doesn't faze you anymore.
-Every song you hear, you imagine what the guard work could be.
-You can do your hair and make-up anywhere.
-You can change into your uniform anywhere.
-You go out in public wearing practice clothes, and wonder why people look at you funny.
-Anyone who can throw a piece of wood with a strap 100 feet in the air and catch it becomes your idol.
-Your nails don't come past the ends of your fingers.
-Your toenails haven't been painted for as long as you can remember.
-You jazz run to catch the school bus.
-When you catch yourself switching feet to get back on-step with the background music in the mall.
-You say the pledge of allegiance to YOUR flag.
