Chase Scene (1997)
Chase Scene by Donald Hill was written in 1997 as a commission by Paul R. Hinman and the East Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble.
This is a rather short piece, but very furious in nature. Keyed in F,
the piece transitions frequently between 3/4 and 4/4 time at a brisk tempo.
“With driving intensity” is the first direction given to the performer.
The quick pace and dissonant chord structure coupled with driving percussion put you right in the chase.
Even though this particular music was never intended to accompany a motion picture, it is certainly worthy of any good chase action sequence.
Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major, Andante (1957)
Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major in 1957 for his son Maxim's 19th birthday. Maxim premiered the piece during his graduation at the Moscow Conservatory. It is an uncharacteristically cheerful piece, much more so than most of Shostakovich's works.
Listen to a sample.Allegro Barbaro (1911)
Allegro Barbaro is one of Béla Bartók's most famous and frequently performed solo piano pieces. Spanning over 200 measures, the composition is typical of Bartok's early style, utilizing folk elements. In particular, the combination of Hungarian and Romanian tunes yields new melodic and harmonic textures, as Hungarian tunes are mostly based on the pentatonic scale, while Romanian ones are chromatic to a larger degree.
